Running and Bruising Under Breasts
Question:
I have been running for about a year and just completed my first 1/2 marathon. I have noticed that I often have bruises on the underside of my breasts. The bruises are not painful and I do not have pain in my breasts when I am running. I am worried though that this may be causing damage to my breasts and want to know if you know what causes this, have any advice on how to stop it or recommend that I see a doctor. Thank you. Answer:
Dear Sylvia,
The bruising may be related to an ill-fitting sports bra. It is very important that your sports bra supports you sufficiently to minimise any ‘bouncing’ whilst you’re running. Too much movement of the breast tissue during running can cause irreparable damage to the Cooper’s ligaments which support the breasts.
