Make 2026 Your Best Running Year Yet!
A new year is the perfect time to reset, refocus, and set exciting new goals. Whether you’re brand new to running or a seasoned club runner, these five simple tips will help you stay motivated and achieve your running goals in 2026.
1. Set Clear, Specific Goals
The more precise your goal, the more achievable it becomes. If you’re training for a race, define the details:
-
What distance will you run?
-
Which month and which event?
-
Is your aim to finish strong, hit a specific time, or place in your age group?
If your goal is about fitness or weight loss, be just as specific. Decide how much weight you want to lose, by when, or how you’d like your measurements or energy levels to change. Even habit-based goals—such as running three times a week—benefit from clear definition.
2. Write Your Goals Down
Once you’ve clarified your goal, write it down. Place it somewhere you’ll see it every day: a kitchen noticeboard, bathroom mirror, diary, or even as your phone or laptop screensaver. Visibility is powerful—seeing your goal regularly helps keep it front of mind and reinforces your commitment. A small daily reminder can make a big difference.
3. Make Your Goals Public
Sharing your goals with others can significantly boost your chances of success. Tell friends, family, colleagues, or training partners what you’re working towards. You can also share your plans online—posting updates or starting a training journal helps keep you accountable and motivated. When others are cheering you on, it’s much harder to give up.
4. Choose an Accountability Tool
Accountability is one of the most effective ways to stay on track. This could be a running app, GPS watch, online forum, training diary, coach, or running club. Choose a tool that suits your lifestyle and make a habit of using it regularly—the more consistently you check in, the stronger your commitment will be.
5. Make Your Goals Personal
Finally, remember that your running goals should be yours—and yours alone. Support and community are invaluable, but don’t feel pressured to follow the crowd. Choose goals that truly matter to you. When training feels tough or motivation dips, reconnecting with your personal “why” will help you push through and keep moving forward.
We’d love to hear about your running goals for the year ahead. Head over to our forums or Facebook page and share your plans—your story might inspire someone else to lace up and get started! 🏃♀️✨
