A Quick Cuppa With…Bronagh McKenna

Bronagh McKenna is a 31 year old Business Development Manager from Dungannon, Co Tyrone.  She has been married for 7 years and is the owner of an 18 month old golden Labrador called Spartacus.

How long have you been running and why did you start?

I’ve been running on and off for the past 6 or so years but only really got into it properly in March 2013.  I played Gaelic football for about 10 years when I was younger, but when I went to University I kinda gave up and from then until about 6 years ago I didn’t really do very much exercise except walking.  I started running as a step on from walking, I enjoy getting out in the fresh air to exercise and have never been a gym lover so the natural progression from walking for me was to start jogging/running.

How often do you run?

I try to get out 3 times a week but if I manage a fourth run it is a huge bonus!

What do you listen to when you are running?

I have a mixture of everything and anything on my phone and like a song that I can sing along to in my head because by the time the song is over its maybe anything up to half a mile further up the road!

How do you stay focused and disciplined?

It can be very hard at times but I find entering into races is a big motivation and helps me keep focused.

Other than running what else do you do to keep fit?

I love Zumba.  The hour class goes so quickly, its nonstop for the full hour and is a good full body workout.

What is your favourite place to run?

I live in the middle of the countryside and there are so many different roads I can take when I leave the house that I don’t have to take the same route two nights in a row.  The roads are really quiet too so I am not worried about traffic or having to move onto the grass verge too often if a vehicle is coming.

How long have you been a member of Running4Women?

About 6 months.

What do you like most about the site?

There is a lot of great information on health and nutrition as well as lots of great tips for running.  I enjoy reading the reviews of running gear and shoes.  The challenges are great also as they are a good way to keep motivated.

What are your goals for the coming year?

By the end of 2014 I would like to have completed at least one half marathon and maybe, and it’s a big maybe, tackle a full marathon!  I already have a few 5k, 5 mile and 10k’s in mind that I will be entering too!
