Winter Leggings For Female Runners
Good Winter leggings can make all the difference when it comes to a comfortable, warm, safe Winter run.
Here’s our pick of the best for 2015.
Helly Hansen’s W Charger Windblock Tights 2 (£75)
These are the ultimate in cold-weather running tights. These full length leggings, are windproof and waterproof to protect against even the harshest Winter weather. Thicker fabric panels in key areas keep joints and torso super-warm. Pre-shaped knee areas and a stretchy back panel mean the fabric will stay put (no more flapping or riding up to let cold air in!) and the fabric is brushed inside so they feel great. There’s a sizeable pocket (sweatproof), zips at the ankles and a drawstring waist. No cold air, rain or snow will be able to penetrate these amazing leggings! They’re reflective, too, so your safety and visibility is covered.
Ronhill Vizion Photon (£38.39)
Ronhill is a classic running brand and these are their newest women’s Winter leggings. We couldn’t fault them: fantastic full length design, great fit, just thick enough to be warm and weatherproof without being too hot. They wash well, dry quickly, and combine bright colours and reflective design to aid Winter running visibility, too.

Bjorn Borg Hydro-Pro Leggings (£55)
The Hydro-Pro leggings from Bjorn Borg’s new technical sportswear range are good for milder Winter runs. They’re full length, but not very thick (think standard lycra leggings) but they do have very bright neon styling down the side of each leg, ideal for making sure you’re more visible as you run. They’re lightweight, breathable and wash and dry well, making them a great choice for Winter. The little reflective detail on the hip contributes to visibility, too.
Tribe Sports 3/4 Capri Running Tights (£32.50)
Tribe Sports are a new brand, producing quality running kit for male and female runners. Their distinctive black and yellow 3/4 length capris are a good option for warmer Winter days or Autumn and Spring running. Stretchy, comfortable fabric which has been treated with an antibacterial finish means they’ll stay fresher than some other leggings, and the design uses moisture management fabric with zoned ventilation. You’ll be comfortable and fresh. There’s a secure zipped pocket on the back and the fabric has 360 degree reflectivity to help you be more visible in low Winter light.

Proskins Active Baselayer Leggings (£34.95)
Proskins specialise in clever sportswear featuring graduated compression, boosting running performance and helping you recover faster too. Some of their products even target cellulite. We tried the leggings in the Active range (best for female runners). Remember that these are base layer, so need to be worn under a thin pair of tights, or with shorts over the top. They are supremely comfortable, like a second skin, and do feel as if they add an intriguing extra element of support.
VO2 Capri Running Tights (£24.99)
Vo2 are a sport-specific brand, aimed squarely at triathletes and runners. As you’d expect, these 3/4 length capris are just what us runners need: good quality, well designed and a great fit. They’re not full length, so recommended for warmer Winter days (they do happen!) and will see you right through into Spring and Summer.

Odlo (£60)
Thse black and pink tights are from outdoor specialists Odlo so you know they’ve been designed with Winter in mind. Full length, with zip at the ankle and a vivid pink panel on the lower leg, they’re stylish, comfy and durable. There’s plenty of reflective print, a back pocket and extra stretch at the knees.

Five Feathers Earth to Sky Leggings (£65)
Five Feathers are a fitness brand who produce beautiful quality sportswear which can be worn as day wear, too. We love their Earth To Sky leggings and think they’d be great for indoor Winter workouts, the gym, or even cross training like yoga. The benefit of these thick, quality, well-designed fitness leggings is that they double up as everyday-wear, too, perfect if you’re meeting a friend or running errands on your way to work out.
Be An Athlete Neon Leggings (£38)
Be An Athlete’s neon leggings won’t offer weatherproof protection but they are very comfortable and bright, thanks to the vivid neon lettering. They’d be a good choice for milder Winter runs, or for gym work or treadmill running. They’re noticeably more comfortable than most high-cotton content leggings, and thicker too (to save our blushes!) A good addition to your leggings collection which will take you into Spring and beyond.
