Orthotic Experts Warn That Wearing
Flip-flops Can Cause Long Term Health Problems

Put your best foot forward with new stylish Place Sandals, proven to help foot health

During the warmer summer months, UK podiatry clinics see an increase in patients complaining of foot pain. According to Paul Fenelon, CEO of Langer, Europe’s leading custom foot orthotic laboratory, “women wear more supportive shoes during the winter, however once the ice has melted, they tend to slip into their airy, less constrained – and less supportive flip-flops”.

Flip-flop loyalists may forget that their favourite piece of summer footwear was initially created to be worn at the beach or pool. They weren’t designed for hours spent walking in the city. It’s the flip-flops basic design that contributes to Summer’s most common foot injury, Metatarsalgia.

An extremely painful condition, metatarsalgia is an inflammation of the ball of the foot. “When you walk in flip-flops, you must grip the toe piece with your toes. Whilst doing this you are flexing your toes, which causes the ball of your foot to be driven hard into the ground,” says Mr. Fenelon. “You’re using muscles out of turn and with no foot support, you get pain across the ball of your foot and its joints – the metatarsal joints.” When left untreated, metatarsalgia can cause stress fractures of the metatarsal joints and several weeks in a cast, or worse, a complete bone fracture that requires surgery.

If you’re not experiencing foot pain and refuse to be without your favourite summer accessory, Mr. Fenelon suggests that you invest in a pair of sandals with a stiffer sole, an arch support, deep heel seat and a rocker bottom such as the new and unique Place footwear brand. And, don’t wear the same pair year after year. “The worst thing for your feet is to wear a pair of flip-flops that are completely beaten up.” If you’re going to wear flip-flops in the summer, buy new ones every year.”

With over 75% of people in the UK experiencing foot problems in their lifetime, 90 per cent of them women, it is important to choose the right summer shoes. Foot health is a major issue during the summer period, with many people experiencing severe knee, back and foot pain caused by poor foot care. The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists recommend wearing open sandals to help prevent excessive foot sweating, and odour in the summer months.

Orthotic foot experts, Langer, has over 34yrs experience in making custom made orthotics and designed the new Place Sandal range to enable as many people as possible to benefit from their unique orthotic footbed technology. Every Place Sandal has been expertly designed and incorporates all of the biomechanical knowledge and experience gained through years in the foot health care industry.
Studies performed by the Birmingham Gait Lab in the UK have indicated that the unique Biomechanical Footbed Technology, BFTTM in Place sandals can help to control and reduce excessive pronation, help to naturally re-align your feet and reduce muscle pre-activation, which in turn can reduce muscle fatigue. These sandals revitalise tired feet and they look as good as they feel.

Mr Mike O’Neill, a leading UK Podiatric Surgeon, says Place Sandals are; “A great looking sandal, which reduces some common aches and pains associated with long periods of standing and/or walking that can be caused by less structured summer footwear.”

Capri – Part of the Vitality Range, the minimalist “Capri” offers blissful comfort and exceptional style. These gorgeous sandals include a feminine toe loop design with full leather strap.    They come with all the benefits of BFTTM technology. Available in classic red, white, black and pale gold.
