Blisters are possibly one of the common running injuries. They can hit you when you least expect it and can put an end to a good race or training run, with the niggling pain taking your concentration away. Blisters – What Causes Them? Blisters are caused by a combination between friction excessively moist foot environment. The body responds to the friction by producing fluid. The fluid builds up beneath the part of the skin being rubbed, causing pressure and pain. Other causes of blisters are:

Running at a faster pace.

Poor fitting shoes.

Foot abnormalities such as bunions, heel spurs, and hammertoes.

Heat and moisture will intensify friction by making your feet swell

Blisters – How To Prevent Them: As with other running injuries, begin with the shoes:

Your shoes must fit correctly to prevent blisters. Check the height of the ankle and heel counter as these are potential blister traps. Avoid shoes that impinge on your toes from the sides and the top.

Socks: Select socks that fit your foot without being too tight or loose. Choose soft wicking fabric such as Coolmax – NO cotton – cotton absorbs moisture and is usually a little rough in texture. Do not wear socks that are too worn.

Try and keep your feet dry

Do NOT wear new shoes to race in – wear them in first.

Regular foot inspection should identify any potential blister sites, as would general training runs.

Regular application of a drying agent to the skin, such as methylated spirits, especially to sites most at risk is a good option. Do not apply to existing blister areas!

If you have specific areas that are prone to blisters you might try applying some covering such as Compeed or Second Skin. These types of product can be found in the Foot Care area of most Chemists

Treatment of Blisters: Be aware that if the blister remains intact, and there is no fluid seeping out, then it is technically a sterile lesion and if possible it should remain intact. Leaving it intact aids the healing. This is easy if the blister is not in a high weight bearing or stressed area and if the blister is small. If the blister is large and somewhere prominent, such as the end of the big toe, side of the little toes or on the heel then it is not desirable to leave intact. This is due to the continued amount of friction that it would be exposed to and the pressure applied to it. If you do have blisters like this then lance the side of the blister with a clean, sterile needle and squeeze gently to remove the fluid. Make sure your hands are clean and try to keep the roof of the blister intact as this will aid the healing process. It is important that an antiseptic dressing is applied immediately and fixed securely in place. If the blister has already broken then the same antiseptic dressing should be applied

Our waterproof socks and gloves use patented technology, ensuring the ultimate in waterproof and breathable protection for the feet and hands.

Great in the cold and wet, the waterproof technology keeps you warm and dry. Even when it’s warm, sweat is pulled away from the body and leaves through the highly breathable membrane.

As a result SealSkinz products ensure your feet, hands and head always remain totally dry. They also reduce the chance of blisters on your feet as the three-layer technology helps to prevent your foot being rubbed against your shoe.

SealSkinz exceptional technology uses a unique seamless three layer construction – an outer, a waterproof, highly breathable membrane and an inner lining.

How they work

Inner Layer

The inner lining has been specially developed to actively wick moisture away from the skin to increase comfort and warmth and reduce the chance of blisters. It is made from either Coolmax or Merino wool.

Middle Layer

The waterproof breathable membrane is inserted using patented technology and allows perspiration, as water vapour to escape whilst preventing water coming in. The membrane typically has a breathability of greater than 65% WVP, making the socks and gloves completely waterproof, highly breathable and windproof.

Outer Layer

The outer layer is designed for extra durability and abrasion resistance with stretch to fit properties. It is tough and durable designed to stand up to all weather conditions.

Thin Mid Length Socks. A thin and lightweight calf length sock with fine Merion wool lining for excellent wicking performance. Suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities. Whatever the weather, SealSkinz socks will keep your feet comfortable and dry.

close fitting inner actively wicks swear and moisture away from the skin

Waterproof breathable membrane

Tough durable outer

The highly breathable membrane reduces sweat build-up by allowing moisture transmission from the foot through the inner layer to the outer layer

The Waterproof membrane ensures feet are always warm and dry. Elasticated instep and Achilles for additional support.

Product Review – Thorlo Thick Cushion running socks by Victoria R4W member

STYLE: I am not a fan of long ankle cuffs – but this is purely an aesthetic thing! Score 3/5

COMFORT/FIT/FRESHNESS: Great – very comfortable. If one isn’t used to wearing thorlos the thickness could cause problems with the fit of running shoes, but I had no problems. Score 5/5

QUALITY: Well made, nice quality. Score 5/5

OVERALL: I love these socks! I’ve had a few pairs of Thorlos in the past and loved them all. This style feel more ‘natural’ and ‘cottony’ than some of the other styles, but still have the wicking and non blister causing properties that are so valued.

Only marked down because I don’t like long cuffs! Score 4/5

In this product review, R4W contributor Nicole Feliciano road tests some of the most popular running socks on the market and offers some invalulable tips on buying and caring for them.

If you’ve been running in cotton socks and putting up with blisters, soggy feet and poor fit, it’s time to head to your local fitness store and research your options. Sport specific socks are now readily available to runners and are well worth the investment.

Why spend more than £10 ($18) on a pair of performance running socks? The #1 benefit is the elimination of blisters. Running socks are designed with technical benefits to keep feet cooler, drier and more comfortable. Running with cool, dry comfortable feet will eliminate blisters from your training.

The #2 reason to buy running socks is improved fit. Your normal tube sock, tennis sock, or cotton gym sock doesn’t offer a snug customized fit. Poorly fitting socks create gaps between the running shoe and the foot. These gaps cause irritation and discomfort. A well fitting sock molds to your foot and eliminates rubbing.

Climate control is the #3 reason to invest in running socks. The new socks on the market place promise to keep your feet cool and dry. Here’s how the new technical fibers, such as Coolmax® work. Technical fibers in running socks are designed to pull moisture away from the bottom of the sock. Moisture is redistributed throughout the sock allowing sweat to dry faster and your feet to stay drier.

Putting them to the test:

I laced up and put several pairs of running socks to the test. Here’s a brief recap of what is currently available.

ULTIMAX® by WIGWAM

Sock tested: Performance Quarter

www.wigwam.com

They say: These socks are recommended for general fitness, running and cycling. The Ultimax Ironman sock has a patented Moisture Control System and a two year performance guarantee. Wigwam touts their cushioned instep and ankle, saying the added padding protects the Crural ligament from stress and lace pressure.

I say: The sizing ran a bit large. I wear an US 8 ½ running shoe. The size medium sock claims to fit a women’s US 6-10 (UK size 4-8). On the plus side, these socks were a great medium weight and the Ultimax® Moisture Control System kept my feet nice and dry. The “Y” design heel pocket really did cradle my heel in comfort and the cushioned sole did absorb shock when I was running on pavement. As far as design, the Ironman® logo at the ankle is cute and definitely sporty.

WRIGHTSOCK™

Sock tested: Double Layer™with Coolmesh®

www.wrightsocks.com

They say: Wrightsock™ has a patented anti-blister system. The Wrightsock™ is designed with two layers of fabric to absorb the friction of the foot rubbing against the shoe. The inner layer of the sock is designed with Coolmax® intended to wick moisture away from the foot and spread the moisture out over four channels in the sock; thus giving sweat a larger area to evaporate. They also offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

I say: TheDouble Layer™ construction made the socks seem a little slippery at first. After a kilometer or so, I adjusted to the fit and was pleased with the socks performance. Wrightsock™ come in feminine colors (I tested a lavender and white pair)and I like the low rise, ankle hugging design.

THORLO

Sock tested: Crew Medium-Protectionlevel 3

www.thorlo.com

They say: Thorlo® offers a 30 day no risk trial–if these socks don’t fit better than your ordinary socks you get your money back. Protection Level 3 products are designed to help protect your feet from the damaging effects of impact, shear and blistering caused by running. Thor-lon®fibers run throughout the sock to provide maximum durability and moisture management.

I say: If you like thick socks you’ll love Thorlo®. The manufacturer suggests customers who opt for this sock may want to go ½ size larger in their running shoes. These socks were cushy and comfortable and did a great job controlling moisture. As a matter of personal preference, I prefer thinner socks that make my feet feel more connected to my running shoes.

DEFEET®

Sock Tested: Cush 3-D™ with Low cuff

www.defeet.com

They say: Their socks provide ample padding throughout the footbed. DeFeet® offers a one year guarantee for socks to be free of defects. En·Duro·Skin™ construction reinforces the external heel and toe puncture areas. These socks are durable and combine the benefits of CoolMax®’s breathability with FreshFX® bacteria fighting fibers.

I say: Initially, I found the fit a bit loose, but again, this didn’t propose any problems once I began running. Comparatively, I did notice my feet became the sweatiest in this sock. What I liked…these socks have the coolest designs in the market. The patterns on the “holographic cuff” become visible once the sock is put on the foot. Overall, I was drawn to the thin texture of these socks and their eye-catching colors (hot pink, turquoise, etc.).

NIKE

Sock Tested: Elite Running Sock

www.nike.com

They say: Nike’s Dri-FIT technology wicks away moisturef rom the foot. Nike’s foot strike cushioning technology was specially developed in the Nike Sports Research Lab using pressure point mapping of a runner’s foot strike. These socks are designed with Cordura® nylonin the heel and toe to provide durability and to resist abrasion.

I say: These were the thinnest socks I tried. I found them to be the best fitting socks that I tested (note: I run in Nike running shoes so perhaps that had something to do with influencing my decision). My feet stayed very dry throughout my workout. I liked the contoured toe pocket. My feet felt swaddled in comfort and not bound up inside of my shoes. One trick with these socks—they are anatomically designed for the right and left foot. If you loose ½ of a pair it may be hard to match them up with a mate from another pair!

Caring for your running socks:

Congratulations. You’ve seen fit to elevate your running performance by adding technical socks to your gear. Now, shouldn’t you take the time and energy to properly care for this investment?

Most manufacturers suggest turning the socks inside out before washing. Washing socks inside out helps to fluff up the padding between runs. When washing, use warm or cool water and no bleach. Adding a liquid fabric softener can help to lubricate the sock’s technical fibers and extend their life. After washing, tumble dry the socks under low heat or let them line dry. Adhering to these care instructions will add to the lifetime performance of your socks.

One note, since you are not using hot water and bleach, your socks may not stay pearly white. What you are giving up in the way of whiteness, will more than be compensated for in comfort and durability.

Updating your gym bag with sport specific socks will result in more comfortable runs and may even inspire you to add a mile or two to your workout. Next time you are at a sports store pick up a pair of running socks—your feet will thank you!

Feet and body tune into each other which results in improving balance. Using all details of foot makes feet function better.

Why Toesocks ?

• Better toe movement with EPT™ technology contributes to proprioception and body balance

• Hygienic as they prevent bacterial growth
• Warm feet with increased circulation
• Seamless fabric no friction
• Toes do not rub together which prevent blisters
• Exercised toes stay in their natural shape

Product Review – by Viv – R4W Member

STYLE – Slightly unusual style with separate bits for each toe but looked good. Score 4/5

COMFORT/ FIT – Felt strange at first but very comfortable when out on a run and didn’t rub anywhere. I particularly liked the heel flap, which prevented any rubbing from trainers. Score 4/5

FRESHNESS – Kept feet dry Score 4/5

QUALITY – Washed well and feel good quality. Score 5/5

OVERALL – The only drawback to these was that they were a little thicker than I usually wear but will be good for winter. Having toes separated was strange at first but very comfortable once I got used to it! Score 4/5

Socks are another very important item of clothing and one that is very often overlooked when it comes to buying sports clothing. If your socks are slightly too small, too big, or too thin then you will end up with blisters and a ruined run or worse still a ruined race! I have learned from experience so when I purchase a pair of socks I take my running shoes with me and try the socks on with MY shoe (it is also a good idea to take your socks along when purchasing a pair of shoes)

When purchasing socks always check for seams in the toe area that may cause you problems also check on the fabric; synthetic fabrics such as CoolMax and acrylic are more suitable than cotton as they wick away perspiration more effectively.

Check out your nearest specialist retailer for expert advice.

PRODUCT REVIEW – Pretty Polly – Running Sock

By Kathryn

STYLE – Novel socks with a thick padded sole for comfort. Score 4/5

COMFORT/ FIT – Lovely soft fabric. They feel very comfortable to wear but have quite a chunky toe seem which may rub on longer runs. Score 5/5

FRESHNESS – They are quite a bulky sock so I found my feet got quite warm in them compared to my usual ones– but I think for cold weather running they would be excellent. Score 4/5

QUALITY – Good fabric washes well. Score 5/5

OVERALL – I really liked these socks, they were very soft, comfortable and warm for winter. They only draw back is that they are a little bulky so my trainers felt a bit tight with them on. Score. 5/5

PRODUCT REVIEW – Pretty Polly – Running Sock

By Wendy

STYLE – Excellent style, loved the pattern, the neutral style, the hit of colour, and a very nice cut, I’m not a lover of long socks or trainer socks, these were just a nice length especially for someone with short legs like me. They felt good to wear Score 5/5

COMFORT/ FIT- A very comfortable fit, nice thin upper and padded underneath around sole of the foot and the heel. In the warm weather we have had, they felt great, my feet didn’t overheat at all with them but at the same time there was plenty of padding Score 5/5

FRESHNESS – No problem with the freshness of the socks at all. Score5/5

QUALITY - Excellent quality, very well made, have worn, washed and tumble dried the socks a number of times and they’ve never faltered at all. Score 5/5

OVERALL – A first class pair of socks that I would recommend to anyone and would definitely consider purchasing myself if they were at the right price. Score. 5/5
Pretty Polly –Blister Resist

Karen

STYLE – I found the colours to be very feminine (pale blue and white matched my Nike shoes) and the snug ankle design very attractive. Score5/5

COMFORT/FIT - As I have a small foot size (2 1/2 -3) I found them to be slightly on the baggysize when I first tried them on though they contoured to my foot once I started to run. These socks are midway thickness compared to other brands on the market which I’ve also tried and which have either been too thin or too thick. The double “skin” allows freedom of movement within the shoe whilst also offering sufficient padding at the front of the foot which is where I tend to need it most. Nearing the end of a 7 mile run I felt the left one start to slip a little down the back of my ankle though this happened only the once and rectified itself without me having to do anything!! Maybe I just have a weird running gait!! Score 4/5

FRESHNESS – The inner lining drew moisture away from the foot thus keeping it dry though the outside layer was slightly damp. The most important thing is that there was no rubbing and therefore no blisters once I’d taken them off. Score 4/5

QUALITY – In the past I’ve paid around £10 for socks that didn’t offer the same quality. I only hope that they start to do a slightly smaller size as that was really the only personal fault I could find. (I think maybe I should get my feet stretched) Score 5/5

OVERALL- Nice girly design and colour and excellent value for money offering good padding support for those of us who like a double skinned sock that isn’t too thick. Score 4/5

Pretty Polly –Blister Resist

Sam

STYLE -. Score 4/5

COMFORT/FIT –The design gives extra protection where you need it most – over the heel. Fantastic for longer distances. Score 5/5

FRESHNESS – Score 5/5

QUALITY – Washed well. Score 5/5

OVERALL- Good Fit, super soft and cushioned. Did not cause any rubbing in the usual sore spots on a larger run. Score 5/5
