Stitch

Question:

I have been running for about 4 months now, usually 3 miles about 3-4 times a week, and every couple of runs (perhaps one out of four) I get really bad stich pains in my abdomen. I don’t eat for 3 hours before a run and I get plenty of fluid beforehand. How can I prevent this?

 Rachel

Answer:

Dear Rachael,

Stitch pain is thought to be associated with increased tension on ligaments that attach the abdominal muscles to the diaphragm. It can occur if there is insufficient time between warm up and exercise, training in very cold temperature, or training at too high an intensity.

I would recommend starting your sessions slowly and gradually increasing your speed, avoid drinking too much water before and during sessions.
