Shin Pain

Question:

I have been training for half marathon for the last 4 months.
I did my half marathon in Mumbai and the heat took its toll on me and I finished it in 2 hours and 40min. I am now planning to do another half at the end of February and I am following Jeff Galloway’s training program. I work as an elementary school teacher and when I came home after work yesterday I had this sudden and nagging pain down my shins on both my legs. I did hot fermentation and the pain subsided. The whole of today my legs have been feeling a bit fatigued / raw? What could it be??…I am worried that I do not want to miss out on my training part as I really enjoy it. Please advise…

 Answer:

Dear Annie,

Your symptoms may be related to overtraining, inappropriate footwear, biomechanical issues or a combination of all three. If the arches of your feet are not adequately supported during running, the muscles in the lower leg are under a great deal of stress. Too much of this stress can lead to pain.
I would recommend that you consult a sports physiotherapist for advice and treatment.
