Running and Swollen Fingers

Question:

My fingers swell up considerably when I’ve been running.  It happens more often when I run 10 miles or more. Can you give me any idea as to why this happens?

Answer:

Dear Julia,

It may be related to circulation or possible your hydration levels. With the latter situation, drinking too much water during longer runs can cause a reduction in sodium levels which can lead to a condition called hyponatraemia, one of the symptoms of which is swelling of the hands and fingers. I strongly would recommend that you consult your GP for further investigations.
