Now into my second week of running. Feel really please – now at 1/2 a mile (and that is a huge acheivment). Want to add more each week but know I have to take it slowly. Feel slightly "off" this evening as didn't add any more distance and haven't lost any weight since last week. However, feel really into this running.
At the moment I am running in some comfortable trainers but wonder if I should invest in some more expensive shoes as my ankles do ache a bit when running. Tomorrow I will run the 1/2 mile and add another bit to it. Goal for end of August is 1 mile.

Hi Andrea, sorry you felt a bit off this evening, hope you're feeling better in the morning.
And yes, you must invest in some good running shoes if you intend to carry on. Everyone has a different style of running and there are running shoes out there to suit all styles. Its worth going to a proper sports shop that has the equipment and staff with enough knowledge to analyse your gait and help to fit you with some shoes which will support you properly while you run. You only get one pair of feet after all!

Just had the unexpected pleasure of having a spare half hour in the day as children all occupied elsewhere. Determined to better last night's performance and I did so feel very pleased.
Question – the book I am reading talks about taking it really slow if you have never run before and need to loose weight. They suggest adding more distance once a week. Given that I am running just 1/2 – 3/4 mile and able to run 4 – 5 times a week does anyone think this weekly addition is too slow? Also, my calves and shins are aching during a run – just that unused muscle feeling . Should I keep at this distance until it lessons?

Andrea
I'm sure Joanne will give you better advice than me but I would say that if something is hurting, even if it is just an 'unused muscle' feeling then you should listen to your body, it lets you know its hurting for a reason. As the story says ' slow but steady wins the race' (Tortoise and the Hare)!

Hi Andrea, Yes would have to agree with Carol, Firstly don't worry about the distance yet slow and steady is fine, you will be surprised how quick you start to be able to increase the distance. Secondly you should really go and see a specialist sports shop and have your feet properly checked for a good pair of trainers, this might be why your shins and calves are aching. But always remember to do some stretching before and after your run. Take a look at our stretching section and ask the expert section for more advice.

Thankyou both for your replies. I will keep on taking it slowly. Thankyou for the article link Joanne. My husband has the book which was featured (he is a barefoot – no support shoe runner). His advice was that if I am leaning towards barefoot, on my next run I should think about what my foot strike is like. Then, if I still want to go towards barefoot I should by a cheap pair of pumps (which is what he runs his ultras in) and see how they go for a while – then launch into expensive stuff if I want to stick with barefoot. So watch this space…….. I will run this evening or tomorrow and then we are away camping for a week. Hope to be able to fit a couple of short runs in then.
Thanks again for a great forum

We went to Keswick and it was great. Came home, visitors, planning etc etc means I haven't posted for ages.
Didn't manage to run while camping because my hubby wasn't with us to watch the kids. Got back and he is training for another ultra so its hard to squeeze time in so I don't feel as though I have progressed far. Anyway – I will plod on. Hope to get out tonight even if it is raining!!!! as we have more visitors arrving tomorrow – such is life.

Hi Andrea,
Glad you had a good time camping. It's hard to get out sometimes what with children and family committments. I just get out as and when really and as you say it's better than nothing, so keep going

hi everyone again
I am plodding on – plodding being the operative word!!!! However, I am managing to get out and progressing slowly. We are in more of a routine now again after a crazy summer so I want to start building in what I am doing – At the moment I am managing 3 times a week but still only running 1 mile. Any tips on how to get that further within a really busy life – have people added by distance or time running (hope that makes sense).
Thanks for the constant encouragement even when I am not posting – it is appreciated.

I think one of the things I need to do is use this journal in the proper sense so hope people don't mind a lot of posting.
Went out last night for a walk jog with my 11 year old son who does some running and enjoyed it very much although overall probably didn't actually run for more than half a mile. Tonight I went out alone and managed to run for two straight half miles with a short walk in between. Felt very encouraged. Will walk in the morning and run/walk onThursday morning. I keep telling myself "better to start slow" and "I don't want to get to 50 without running a 10k"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Andrea
You post just as often as you want to, that way we can keep you motivated. You're being very sensible starting off slowly and building up – you'll be surprised just how quickly your stamina will build. And yes, you will do a 10K before you're 50!

OK – just been on this evening with my 17 year old son as protector!!!
Ran 3 min 45 sec walked 30 sec
Ran 4 min 1 sec walked 30 sec
Ran 4 min 10 sec walked 30 sec
Ran 3 min 42 sec
Didn't think about distance – just time
Feeling quite good about it really – am determined to keep this up – will do paper round with son in morning (lots of hills) and badminton tomorrow evening. Day off on Saturday and will run/walk Sunday morning.
Thanks for the great encouragement. There are 3 10ks within driving distance next spring one of which I will aim for.

Hi Andrea,
Sorry not replied for a while, office has been really busy, any way just catching up on your journal, well done you are doing really well. Yes just keep doing the timing and then worry about the distance afterwards. Dark nights are coming make sure you read our safety guide

Have a good weekend

OK – advice please
Got up fairly early this morning really looking forward to running (hope that's impressive being Sunday!!!!!!!!)
Did 3 min 55 sec walk 30 sec
3 min 20 sec walk 30 sec
2 min 30 sec walk 30 sec
4 min 20 sec walk 30 sec
So not as good as Thursday evening. Feeling a bit disappointed with it.
It was pouring but I enjoyed that. What happens is that I am still getting muscle aches in my calves. My gut feeling is that they are still telling me they are not used to this excercise, especially now I am actually trying to do a timed programme
I am still in the middle of the barefoot/sturdy shoe debate.I can really see the arguement for bare foot type running and have seen it work so well in hubby (he has far less injuries than the rest of his running club, is the only ultra runner and the only bare foot runner), and really enjoyed reading Barefoot Runner. Can anyone tell me why they don't think bare foot is good so I can hear the other side.
Meanwhile – onwards and upwards I hope. I have made a 3 to 4 x per week running plan and am determined to keep going to aim for the 10k. Hope to do better tomorrow evening.
Thanks for the encouragement – this forum will be a bit part of my training plan for a while I hope.

Hi Andrea,
You will get days like that when you don't do as well as other days, but it is all about getting out there and doing something, it's all miles on the legs. You are doing really well.
Barefoot running is a really individual thing.
Hope your run goes ok tonight.

This evening -

Ran 6 min 23 sec walk about 2 min
Ran 5 min 07 sec
So ran over 17 minutes in all
Will run tomorrow evening again
