A Quick Cuppa With…Dee

Dee is a 47 year old Midwife from St Minver in North Cornwall. She is married with three teenage daughters and likes to run with her Jack Russell dog Jo for both fitness and fun.

How long have you been running and why did you start?

I started running 6 years ago to try to control my asthma. When I started I had never run before and spent more time walking than running. So far I have completed 3 half marathons and a triathlon.

How often do you run?

I run between 2 and 5 times a week depending on my work patterns and other commitments. Running fits in well with my shifts which change every week and I usually run with my Jack Russell dog Jo (who is the better runner!).

What do you listen to when you are running?

I never listen to anything when I’m running, I am lucky to able to run in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

How do you stay focused and disciplined?

I’m not sure I do stay focused and disciplined, I find all sorts of excuses not to go out running but I just don’t feel right until I go for a run.

Other than running what else do you do to keep fit?

I have an active job, I also do walking, cycling, skiing, yoga and gardening. I also like jumping off the rocks and swimming in the sea in the summer.

What is your favourite place to run?

I prefer to run off road and particularly love the coast path from Rock to the Rumps Polzeath. I find it really exciting running in stormy weather when the wind is howling and the waves are crashing against the rocks, I’ve been blown off my feet a few times and had to crawl to my favourite viewing rock on Pentire Point. I get a bit frustrated with all the mud in the winter.

How long have you been a member of Running4Women?

About 2½ years now.

What are your goals for the coming year?

I have entered the round Britain relay next June and need to do lots of interval/sprint training so that I can complete my 10k in an hour. I am also considering entering the Bodmin half marathon next February but haven’t committed myself to this just yet.
